In the heart of San Antonino Castillo Velasco, Oaxaca, this extraordinary artisan has demonstrated that vision resides not in the eyes, but in the hands and in the memory of the heart. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the masterful use of clay, it has managed to transcend physical barriers to position itself as an international reference for Oaxacan pottery.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"el-legado-del-senor-de-las-sirenas-y-su-maestria-en-el-barro\"><a><\/a><strong>The legacy of the &#8220;Lord of the Mermaids&#8221; and his mastery of the clay<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Affectionately known as the &#8220;Lord of the Sirens,&#8221; he began his path in art at a very young age. However, more than two decades ago, blindness knocked at his door due to glaucoma. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Far from abandoning his craft, he perfected his technique through touch. His pieces acquired a new dimension of depth, where each texture and relief tells a story of resistance and love for the land of Oaxaca. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His specialty is large format pieces, especially his famous mermaids, female figures and flower pots decorated with floral motifs that evoke the nature of the Central Valleys.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has the ability to turn clay into faces with vivid expressions, largely inspired by the memory of the face of his wife, Santa Reina Teresita Mendoza.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"santa-reina-teresita-mendoza-pilar-esencial-del-taller\"><a><\/a><strong>St. Queen Therese Mendoza: essential pillar of the workshop<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind the work of Jos\u00e9 Garc\u00eda Antonio there is an essential presence, his wife, Teresita. More than a muse, she is the support, guide and fundamental part of the workshop. Her work has been key to keeping the craft alive and giving continuity to each process.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a day-to-day basis, Teresita also plays a decisive role in the creation. She acts as their &#8220;eyes&#8221;, checking the pieces, fine-tuning details and adding elements that give them identity, such as ornaments, hairstyles, traditional jewelry and the scales of the mermaids. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, his daughters and son participate in the firing of the pieces in the stone kiln, where they reach high temperatures.
