Claymaking is an ancient practice that Mixtecs started using during the early Postclassic period (900 – 1200 BC), to replace volcanic stone. Their designs often represented idols, animals, gods, stepped fretwork, and other images that linked them to their surroundings.

These craftsmen innovate with techniques such as white clay pottery, which features a refined matte finish and intricate handmade openwork. This method exemplifies both creativity and heritage in contemporary ceramics.

Mezcaleros with Atzompa design

Handmade pieces made of natural clay, sculpted by hand and decorated with natural colors. It is cooked in a traditional wood-fired oven with oxygen reduction. These unique pieces are handcrafted at the Tierra Sagrada Workshop.
