The legacy of the Barro Negro in San Bartolo Coyotepec
San Bartolo Coyotepec is an Oaxacan town recognized worldwide for its distinctive black clay. This ancestral technique, passed down from generation to generation, involves a special firing process that gives the clay its characteristic color and shine.
The history of this art is intertwined with the life of the community, being a source of identity and sustenance. Black clay is not only a form of craftsmanship, but a cultural expression that reflects the worldview and creativity of the people of San Bartolo Coyotepec.
Magdalena’s technique: an ancestral art
Magdalena learned the craft from her parents and grandparents, absorbing not only the technique, but also the love and respect for the material. Her dedication and talent have made her one of the most outstanding artisans in her community.
At the age of 19 she formally began her work with clay. Using the characteristic black clay of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Magdalena -who is also a doctor by profession- has created a wide variety of female figures representing the eight regions of Oaxaca. In them she incorporates traditional elements such as huipiles, tangles, shawls and ancestral hairstyles, achieving that, even without resorting to color, her pieces transmit a surprising wealth of details, movement and corporal expression.
To achieve this level of detail, she follows an extremely meticulous elaboration process. Magdalena first models the faces and then the different parts of the body, giving shape and movement to the garments. Accessories are added with precision, reflecting her deep knowledge of Oaxacan traditions.
Once the pieces are dry, they are carefully assembled and polished with quartz, which smoothes the surface and enhances the tones that highlight each detail. They are then burnished again to obtain the glossy or matte black finish characteristic of black clay. Finally, during firing for approximately eight hours in a low-oxygen atmosphere, the clay acquires the deep dark hue that distinguishes this ancestral technique.
His work has been recognized nationally and internationally, contributing to the preservation and promotion of black clay as Oaxaca’s cultural heritage.

Detailed costumes: a unique expression
One of the most distinctive characteristics of Magdalena’s pieces are the elaborate costumes that adorn her figures. These costumes, meticulously modeled and decorated, represent typical costumes from different regions of Oaxaca, as well as designs inspired by nature and local culture.
Every detail, from the embroidery to the folds of the fabric, is reproduced with astonishing precision, demonstrating Magdalena’s technical mastery and artistic sensitivity.
