Why is a handcrafted piece worth what it costs?
In a world saturated with mass-produced goods, choosing a Mexican handcrafted piece is much more than a purchase: it is a form of resistance. DeCorazón México was born from this idea. In every clay figure, in every alebrije or woven rug, there is a story that deserves to be told and preserved.
But some people still ask: “Why does it cost so much? The answer is simple: because a unique piece has no replica, no immediate delivery time, no volume discount. It has value. It has soul.
Handmade is not a trend, it is a legacy.
Each technique we exhibit in our gallery -whether black clay, Oaxacan filigree, Teotitlán textiles or Mata Ortiz pottery-has centuries of history. These are not fashions, but traditions that have survived by oral transmission, by hands that learn by observing, making mistakes and perfecting.
For example:
- The natural clay that we work with Don Fernando in San Marcos Tlapazola takes weeks to dry without a kiln, only with the heat of the sun and the patience of time.
- Mata Ortiz’s pottery, inspired by Paquimé, is not only painted: it is spoliated, sanded three times, fired over an open fire, and decorated with single-hair brushes.
- The alebrijes of San Martin Tilcajete can take more than three months to paint, with strokes as fine as the artisan’s breath allows.
The silent luxury of authenticity
At DeCorazon Mexico we believe that true luxury is in owning something that no one else has, and that also connects with a piece of history and culture.
We are not talking about luxury for ostentation, but intimate luxury:
That which is hung on the wall or carried in a bag, and when someone asks “where is it from?”, it is answered with pride.
Because it is not an object, it is a conversation.
No molds, no mass production
Did you know that our pieces are not repeated? We work directly with the artisans, without intermediaries, without unfair bargaining and without production pressures. We prefer that a piece takes 4 months to arrive than to compromise its quality or origin.
This has enabled us:
- Create exclusive seasonal collections
- Bringing pieces to hotels such as Viceroy Los Cabos, where they are presented to international audiences.
- Hold workshops with the artisans themselves so that more people value their work from experience.
Buying handmade is also a political act
Choosing a DeCorazon piece is supporting entire communities. Every purchase represents:
- A fair income for the artisan and his family
- Preservation of millenary techniques
- A more ethical and circular economy
As mentioned by the Slow Food Mexico organization, conscious consumption strengthens cultural roots and protects the country’s intangible heritage.
