Henequen: Yucatan’s green gold

Henequen, also known as “green gold”, “sisal” or ki in the Mayan language, is a natural fiber obtained from the Agave fourcroydes, a plant native to Yucatan. According to Mayan tradition, the god Zamná was walking through a henequen plantation when one of its thorns wounded him. Upon observing the leaf, he discovered that it sprouted extremely resistant fibers, ideal for serving his people (Yucatán Today, 2024).

During the 19th and 20th centuries, henequen became a fundamental resource for the international textile industry. This plant, highly resistant to drought, pests and diseases, develops large, fleshy leaves, with shades ranging from bluish white to grayish white, from which a fiber is extracted (Secretaría de Agricultura y Desarrollo Rural, 2017).

It was used to make ropes, ropes, sacks, threads, handicrafts, rugs and even hammocks. For decades, henequen was not only an element of daily use, but also represented the basis of Yucatán’s economy.

How is sisal obtained?

  • Cutting the stalks
    • Workers cut the ripe agave leaves.
    • Large and healthy leaves are selected, which have already reached their development.
  • Defibration (scraping of the blade)
    • The stalk is introduced into a machine called a scraper or shredder, which uses rollers or blades to remove the fleshy part of the leaf.
    • What remains are the long, strong fibers.
  • Sun drying
    • The cleaned fibers are laid out on large surfaces in the open air, under the sun, until they are completely dry.
    • This step is essential so that they do not rot or weaken.
  • Hair styling and sorting
    • Once dry, the fiber is combed to remove impurities and tangles.
    • It is then classified according to quality, thickness and length.
  • Packaging
    • Finally, the fiber is pressed into bales that are marketed to manufacture all kinds of utensils.
